Yea the 8.25 is usually the all around upgrade for the rear since they are pretty easy to find, with no work involved to fit the jeep. Compared to a 44 unless you have one already. Like bill said the 8.8 is a damn good axle but you gotta spend some money on it to make it fit. Plus the .75 narrow on each side but usually that isn't a big deal for most.

so since i have the 8.25 already when i upgrade i should just re-gear, instead of an axle swap?

Pretty much you can beef it up with alloy shafts and a truss .just for added protection

Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 84-89

Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01

Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96

Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01

Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube - used 87-89 on some (not all) XJs equipped with towing package.

So difference it 8.25 and 44. spline count 30 vs 29 , shaft size 1.21 vs 1.31 and ring gear 8.25 vs 8.50 and tube size 3 vs 2.75 both bolt ons.

More info on limits of each axle
http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=101345

COT: Continuous output torque rating
MOT: Maximum output torque rating
Numbers from January edition of Fourwheeler, page 60.

Dana 35 rear axle COT: 870 MOT: 3480
Dana 44 rear axle COT: 1100 MOT: 4460
Ford 8.8 28spline COT: 1250 MOT: 4600
Ford 8.8 31spline COT: 1360 MOT: 5100
Dana60 semifloat COT: 1500 MOT: 5500

The 8.25 should fall between the 35 and 44. Since it a middle ish of the too axle.

Damn that's good deal. I'll have to bookmark that website and check back.

Went to the gun show last weekend and picked up a quad rail for my AK. Love the way it looks.

Its expensive to try to start a collection these days. I don't have a lot of guns but IMO I would rather have a bigger bullet collection than gun collection.
