Afternoon AZ XJ'ers - For the first time since buying the XJ, I am heading up to Payson this weekend, from Mesa, for a spot of camping, though on 33's and the stock 3.55's I am a little concerned. Has anyone made this trip on stock gears/oversized tires? Experiences would be great thanks guys!
I don't say this to discourage you but it will be working overtime all the way up. Hopefully the trans/drivetrain/cooling system are optimal. Just shift manually as necessary and be prepared to refuel sooner than usual. Haha! Beautiful country up there though; enjoy!

I have nothing to say to that... too true!
You're talking to an English guy that would take un underpowered, oversized American vehicle with a gas guzzling V8 over any tosh the UK puts out, any day of the week. Though sadly, nothing is truly English anymore...
Though the 90's Lotus Carlton... that was a sweet ride... then again... GM subsidiary and Chevy Transmission haha American at heart, me!
After many trips off-road at Saguaro Lake etc, the old girl hasn't let me down yet. If anything goes wrong, i can just throw that thing into neutral and roll it back down ha

I just finished some work on a 65 Jag. Never again. Gimme my Jeeps and Alfa Romeos!
My heritage is British/gypsy. I still don't like their cars.

Hey Brit just go up there and have some fun. The forest roads are easy enough to drive a car down. There are many roads to check out and scenery if you know where to go. We usually go up there to climb Payette Draw in our Cherokees that have 33's on them with stock gears. You'll be fine!
This is what I wanted to hear, thank you! Good to know!
Brit, I was just being "over-the-top" since I don't know the condition of your XJ and it is getting to be that time of year here when certain neglected components/systems will fail more than at other times of the year, but, as cruiser mentioned, the XJ is not an English car. Go for it and have fun! Let us know how much you enjoyed it.
