Twin Falls Area
Hey guys back from Utah finally. Bummer you guys had to cancel your trip but maybe if my truck get repaired some time soon I'll be able to go on this next one. Btw, I don't think a renix era Cherokee cluster will work properly on an h.o. Era Cherokee. I'm sure you can mod it up to make it work but they have a slightly different piling system if I remember correctly.

It's up to you man. If your jeeps ran with good pressure before it went out you should be ok. I would get an aftermarket pressure gauge if you can't fix the stock one. They are easy to install and are maybe a little more accurate than stockers anyhow. My opinion on striker kits are they make great power but kill reliability. You will be hard pressed to put 50,000 miles without needing a rebuild but this is all I've heard. I've never done one and also they aren't cheap.
After market oil gauge is probably the way to go.
The HO model isn't all that much increase but it is more likely a gearing issue. Whenever bigger diameter tires are used a corresponding change in gear ratios also needs to happen or it will feel sluggish, especially on the highway. At low range crawling the difference won't be as pronounced.
My gears are 4:88 where yours are probably something like 3:56.
A stroker done right is something like about $3500 plus other labor, parts and complications. Then there is the possibility of cooling issues because of the increased displacement.
The more mods one does the more it leads to other mods. Reading these forums always makes me think big until I think about all the costs involved. I've had to really think through my intended use. Radical rock crawling is kinda fun but the carnage and expense is not worth it to me. What I like is going to places like Boulder Basin, seeing the beauty and just having a good day on the trails. I have plenty of vehicle for that useage (and so do you).

(the oil guage isnt broke its the part thats connected to the engine) ...I mainly ask cause im planing on putting the 5.5" lift thats on big red on the tan one this spring/summer as and tan doesnt move to well with bigger tires.... Ill probably just stick with regearing... To what ratio idk i dont have a truck and trailer to use to transport my rig
Go with an aftermarket gauge. It's probably your best bet and they are pretty cheap. Re-gearing your axles will bring back the power You lose running larger tires. I can also attest that the h.o. 4.0 feels like much more power than a renix and it does have a few more ponies. I've owned and worked on both.

We have an '89 and a '97, and I really can't tell that much difference in performance. We even timed both of them with a stop watch and a quarter mile or so distance....... We're running 4:11 gears with 31-32 inch tires on both rigs.
If you haven't upgraded your exhaust system, that can make a BIG difference in the performance.

Been there man. My jeep at one point had 3.55s and 32,s and it was kinda of a turd until I got up to freeway speed. Once I did gears and went to 4.88s I was on 34s for a while which were great then went to some 35s and it is just fine if not perfect. I also have over 200,000 miles which for how she runs I can't complain on power. They aren't the fastest or quickest rigs out there but they beat the **** out of Toyotas!
