I do it, but only if they hook it to their vehicle (where I tell them looks like a strong point) to avoid liability.
also, I'll only use tow straps. no chains, no hooks.
but, I pulled an S10 out with my buddy's jeep. he was off the road into a frozen marsh, half-sunk. lockers help alot. popped him out in a hurry.

I had to pull my buddy in a brand new Lexus out of a ditch last year at around 4a.m. He called for AAA and they said they were going to be over an hour due to the weather, so he called me. I showed up and a cop was there, and I told him I was there to pull him out of the ditch. The cop said cool and got a radio call asking about the situation, and he said...
"Cancel the tow truck, he's got a friend here to pull him out. He's got a Jeep". That was my black '98 XJ. The rest is history.

Pulled many cars out of ditches and snow banks.
Couple winters back came home to find my father in law had done this with the old yard plow truck

Thing hadn't had brakes for years, and using reverse to stop finally killed the transmission so the tires wouldn't even spin. Front tires were sunk in feet of snow, belly was high centerred on the transmission
Wasn't easy with the ice on the driveway but managed to yank it out with the WJ and a comealong. Have video too, but it's of the WAY wrong way to recover a vehicle. Multiple safety rules were ignored

My wife pulled me out of a couple snow banks last year. The plow on my CJ stopped gonig up and down during a realy nasty wet storm. I was really trying to push the snow as far back as I could, so every half dozen or so pushes into the bank I'd need her to pull me out of it.
