Default Xj will not crank over.

Very strange. I have 1992 XJ 4L with 232 k miles on it. I parked my jeep in the garage and shut it off. After I got out , I wanted to move over about a foot.
The jeep would not turn over at all. I checked the battery and it seemed ok. I even tried jumping it, but no change. There is a
slight whine for about 2 seconds. The lights, radio, etc all work and did not dim when trying to start. I did the obd tests thru the
Ignition and got 2 codes (1-2 and 2-1. I have not had any previous problems up to this point.
Any Suggestions?

Mel

Is your starter covered in oil?

Sounds like the starting is spinning (whine), but not engaging the flywheel.

Yes, there is oil down there. Would you think of taking off the starter and cleaning it or just
replacing the starter because of the age. This may be the original starter.

thanks, Mel

What difference would it make if your starter was covered in oil?

If the starter is covered in engine oil, the oil has gotten into the starter and that wreaks havoc with the starter internals.

Well that makes sense. This starter isn't very old and I was wondering why it was the problem of the jeep not starting.

Does it make a difference if I buy new or rebuilt starter? Rock Auto seems to offer both at good price. Any recommendations
on what brand.
