Default XJ A/C issue, maybe a pulley?!?

My jeep from day 1 always had this "squeal" when I turn the a/c on, if the a/c is off and crank up the Jeep it would be as quiet as a can be when idling...

my jeep was in the garage the past half year with several issues, its back up and running now, again quiet when i start it up sitting there idling, but if say the a/c is on, it squeals so so loudly and it does NOT go away. It used to go away after a few minutes of driving...

What are all the possibilities of this issue? I am assuming, its the pulley. Is there a certain number the bolt for the a/c pulley supposed to be tightened to? and speaking of this, what's the # the tensioner pulley supposed to be tightened to?

Thanks for any help!

Jessica

Try tightening the belt. It has to be stupid tight on the 4.0.

You might want to change out the belt if it old. Then tighten it just until the squealing stops. No more, no less.

Yep - belt is now glazed and will be much more prone to slipping/squealing. Change it but while you have it off give the center clutch bolt on the compressor a few turns and see if it turns relatively freely. There will be some resistance but it should turn easily by wrench in hand.

Agreed---I carried the wrenches on the front seat for a few days, and kept tightening it until it shut up---and yeah-it's stupid tight!

Thanks!! Tightened it up and up and up and Voila it's quiet like a funeral.

Also, the belt is new.

Sorry it's taken so long to update this, it was in fact merely that the pulley needed tightened and the tensioner belt needed to be tightened up, tighter than tight... She runs like a kitten now. Although my oil gauge does read at 60 showing somewhat high oil pressure. -Has a new oil pressure sensor in it so that's not the prob, the oil & filter are both brand new.
