lol same here. i work on cars at work and more after. but i enjoy when its on my own stuff making it better. i still have to build a engine for my other car but no time. and i aready have all the parts.

Yup it's possible. The front drive shaft and all of the transfer case internals spin as long as all 4 wheels are on the road, when put into 4WD a fork in the transfer case just slides a gear into place which allows power to be transferred. Normally it just spins with the road.
At this point I'd suggest getting your XJ up on a lift or jack stands with the transfer case in neutral and rotating things by hand. If the grinding is audible at 30 MPH hopefully you can hear something with your head down there while the engine's off. Could be chain, gears, brakes, bearings, or that garden gnome you hit a while back that you swear looked like it was actually alive or something and just crawls above the gas tank when you park it, scheming and plotting...
