XJ Ask the Question Thread
I had the same problem on my 2001 and all I had to do was tighten the worm gear in the steering box. I'm not familiar with the '89, but my hunch is that it is a common problem.
Here's a link to a decent thread, and a quote from it about tightening the worm gear.
"The worm gear is a internal part of the steering gear box if you have the same issue remove your drivers side electric fan, there is 2 bolts on the top that hold it in and then it slides out from the top.
once that is removed you will be able to see the 5/8" nut on top and a set screw that has a allen head hole on top.
Insert the allen head on top and then lossen the nut once its loose tighten the allen head screw about 1/4 a turn then recheck.
It is easier to have some one inside moving the wheel back in fourth until the slack is gone then tighten the nut to secure it.
For me it was easy to tell that it was getting better becuase before you can move the steering wheel back and fourth and there front wheels didnt move until you moved it quite a bit now its instant.
When your doing it make sure you do it until the slack is gone if you keep screwing the allen head in after the slack is gone you can get to much tension and caue the wheel to become jerky when turning it happen to me the first time when i turned it to much.
But it saved me $200 so well worth trying it atleast if you have the same issue if the slack ever does come back and i cant remove the slack out of it i will get a durango gear box to upgrade it. "

For anyone that may have been looking, the problem is fixed. My neighbor has a vehicle diagnostic and ran my Jeep. Code 22 ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) Voltage High came up, he cleared it and everything is back to normal. All that from changing a radiator hose!

[QUOTE=94xjohio;1905466]Mine xj came with a fan, controlled by temp. So I ran a hot wire from fuse panel to switch then to fan hot wire. I had to use a 25 fuse. Thats the only size it hasn't blown[/QUa

I installed a new Radiator shroud (old one was a mess and not all there) today along with replacement OE clutch fan blade (tips were bent back on the original), and new ZJ fan clutch. Waiting for daytime tomorrow to see if it makes an difference in running temps.
Nothing rubs or grinds while motor is running and in park. Put it in gear and if I start out slow I have no problems, but if (from a stop) I step on the gas quickly I get grinding. Parked it and looked and the fan is touching the bottom right side of the shroud when I do that. Checked and re-checked bolts and nothing is loose. It doesn't look the fan is flexing that I can see. Anyone have any ideas on what else it could be?

I Have a little electrical bug in my 92 xj right brake light. When the lights are off both brake lights work fine. When the lights are on the taillights work until you hit the brakes, then the right light goes out completely. Taillight and the brake light, any suggestions? All help is appreciated, thanks in advance!
