Hello, I've just bought my first XJ and I was wondering if someone might know the answer to this one.... on my door it tells me that my 1998 was manufactured in November 1997. If I was to try and get hold of the original service manuals etc would I be looking for 97' or 98'?
As far as I'm aware... bar trim and color there isn't really any difference in the 98' after all the bigger 97' changes but I would like the list of recalls etc for 98' (or...97') it puzzles me as to which year that would be classed as. If someone could clarify I would be very grateful, which is more important in this instance my 98' date or the Nov 97'?
Thank you,
iamajeep

Also if you notice some car makers are already coming out with 2013 cars this summer. It seems every year they press em sooner to make people buy em
"Welcome to CF. A fast idle and back firing through the throttle body can be caused by timing that is too far advanced, among other things. Need more info about the Jeep."
I was kind of vague,
my jeep is a 1997 Cherokee sport 4.0 I6 with an automatic trans. the engine light is on, and at start up the rpm's are normally pretty low around 1000 then it warms up and the idle is high(2000-3000) and uneven, it will lower from a couple hundred to a thousand rpm and then go back up. When driving on the freeway and just cruising it normally drives fine though the high idle kindof pushes you all the time but as soon as you go to accelerate it will backfire. I think from the sound of the motor when it is idling normal that the timing is spot on and would love to check it but i'm living in texas for a few months and am therefor away from all my tools like a timing light. also my vacuum lines seem perfect, not just how they look but I tried spraying carb cleaner all around under the hood while the jeep was running and there was no change in the idle at all. Sometimes when i'm driving around town the idle will drop to a very normal 800-1000 rpm idle and it runs perfectly for a while and then right back up. I removed and cleaned the speed stepper motor and its mounting area until the q-tips were coming out cleaner then when they went in and that seemed to help a little, it brought the idle down between 1500-2000 on average. anyway, if you need other specifics, please let me know.

I know in hondas if you disconnect the iac while running the idle gets eradic. Not sure if jeeps are the same but if so you can check it by unplugging while running and of nothing changes it could mean its bad.

Just an update for anyone who may visit this thread in the future, I followed this guys advice and unplugged the IAC(stepper motor) and it didn't change a thing so I installed a new one and it entirely fixed the roughness of the idle and the backfiring, however the idle just went way higher and it stayed (very smoothly) right around 3000 rpm. I then thought to my self that maybe it was the throttle positioning sensor(TPS) so I unplugged that and once again nothing happened. I replaced the TPS and it runs perfectly. Both sensors were bad and affecting my jeep. Thanks to JeepyJeepy and the other guy so much for all the great advice. And my engine light is now off!

Today we went wheeling in Hogs canyon near Kanab, Ut. What a great ride. When I flexed really hard a couple times I hit and tore the caps on the front bumper. So those are now history.
That brings me to my question. I think there is supposed to be some sort of a Vacuum ball thing there. Well its not there. There is a vacuum hose there with nothing attached. I plugged the hole with tape.
What does this vacuum thing do and what should not work?
