I need a new engine as mine has compression issues and doesn't have the power like it should. It runs great but when I'm traveling at 50+ mph, and start to go up a hill, my Jeep slows way down and I have to goose it to get it to shift into a lower gear to regain speed.
My question is, I'm thinking about looking for a newer engine from like a 96 or 98, something from there with less mileage and I was wondering, what all will I have to do to make the swap? I know you need to change the computers, but else is there to it? Of course I need all my gauges to work and everything else. I have an '88 Renix 4.0. Would it just be better to find another Renix 4.0 and swap that in instead of going through all the pain of swapping in a Chrysler 4.0?

From the newer XJ (91-99):
Block
Head
Exhaust manifold and downpipe
Intake manifold
Cooling System (or convert your Renix system to open)
Throttle Body
PS pump bracket
Fuel Injectors and Fuel Rail
partial fuel lines (engine side)??
From your Renix XJ: (Swap to new engine)
All sensors, including the TPS & Renix Distributor
Exhaust system (cat back)
all engine accessories, brackets (except PS bracket)
Flywheel (VERY important - matches Renix CPS indexing)
Partial fuel lines (tank side)??
The biggest snag with this swap is usually adapting the Renix TPS to the H.O. Throttle Body, but there's quite a few guides floating around for that.

Does anyone know the name of this part? It's a threaded insert on the intake manifold that has a vertical and horizontal adapters for vacuum hoses. One goes to the fuel pressure regulator and the other goes back into the firewall to somewhere. I busted off the horizontal adapter and I'm trying to find a replacement.

When I start the Jeep up in the morning it starts up and runs for about 3 seconds then shuts off and then i have to start it again and it stays running? Any one ever heard of this?

Your anti-drainback/return check valve in the fuel pump assembly is probably gummed up. Try turning the key to on to prime the pump for 3 seconds or so before trying to start it.

But there are lots of 4.0L engines in junkyards!
