I doubt it, this looks more rusty and there isn't any kind of film on the top.
Here are some pictures, rusty brown. It looks more red in person.

Hey guys I've been having a problem with my 1997 cherokee 4.0. It died unexpectedly on the freeway..fully loaded with mattresses on the roof and 98 degree weather.. so I covered all my bases and found out I had no spark, I hooked up my spare ignition coil and she fired right up. 15 miles later I shut it down and decides it doesn't want to stay running after i try restarting it...it just dies. Since then...
I replaced the distributor, rotor and cap and now it idles but when I give it throttle it backfires like crazy..wasn't doing that before..
I checked my fuel pressure which was 45 psi. and held steady.
I then replaced my crankshaft position sensor. At this point I'm gonna replace my (MAP) sensor. I applied vacuum to the (MAP) sensor and checked for resistance change before and after applying vacuum and there was no change, but I'm not sure that's the correct way to check it...there is no check engine light, I have good spark, I rebuilt the thing only 14,000 miles ago but everything else has 140,000 on it so it could be anything ignition/air/fuel related..also checked valve train and manifold vacuum which was steady.
Any ideas or suggestions on my situation would be much appreciated.

so i just got myself into a 96 xj 4.0 HO for 900$ it was rolled, not sure what happened but it was very minimal damage for a full rollover. (only needed doors and fender replaced which was all done before i bought it, aside from crinkled roof) She runs great 4wd shifts in and out smooth, has 190k. and today i just replaced the following; waterpump, t-stat (full engine/rad flush), power steering pump and changed the oil with Penziol 10-40w high mileage. and as of now runs and drives excellent and couldn't be happier with the purchase.
Now for my question on the lift, iv'e done some looking around and for price this kit seems to be best one for the money; 350$ i am new to Cherokee's and Jeeps in general so i do not know brands. ive heard some good things about Rough Country and a couple cons. i would like some input from anyone who has installed this kit or a similar one and is continuing to drive them.

Doc, Go to general tech. Look in stickie good stuff. I believe it is code 12 is your battery has been dead or unhooked in the last 50 starts. Code 21 is a o2 sensor fail code. To reset disconnect pos and neg terminals touch together for 20 seconds, this will reset your computer. Then try key trick again. It should give code 55. This means no codes, or end of code! Enjoy!

Now I have to ask, are you sure? I'm pretty sure some genius put dexcool in my system. Damage is done, isn't it?
