Best way to tell is by measuring. Get yourself a protractor and a ruler and check the angle of the driveway to the inner C. You don't want them at less than a 90* angle - in other words, the "top" of the knuckle needs to be pointing towards the back of the Jeep.

Someone in a thread mentioned wanting to buy a decent Jeep. He's from NY but I can't remember the thread. Anyone seen this post? He mentioned it in passing so I don't think it was a specific WTB post

Other way around lol - top of knuckle needs to point forwards. Pinion gear pointing up

what makes it the "RIGHT WAY" is he made it so it could be sealed up.. now obviously if you got a rusty jeep... sealing it was useless... but no harm if you do it right.. and if you keep the old pump for emergency spare in plastic bag with extra other emergency parts.. you can fix on the trail to make it home with very little ease..
