Yes it's just a ceramic resistor. The same thing is found in small space heaters. They can be completely eliminated.

After starting, if you hold your tongue to the spring looking thing on the resistor, it leaves a burn mark visible to others, there is too much resistance. Replace it then and please post photos of your tongue for others to reference.

Seriously, unless that 16' camper is a paper box the XJ is going to have a really hard time towing it at any speed without any work. Maybe in 2nd gear.

Do you know the weight of the trailer?
