Default Jeep cutting off

I have an 89 xj just got a brand new engine and when I drive it will start sounding like a rough idle and then a hissing noise and then it'll cut off. It used to do this but the hissing noise didn't happen and it was the sensor on my transmission but I checked all the vacuum hoses and nothing was unattached or out of the norm it almost seems like my fuel pump but I took it off an blew it out and nothing but gas came out. Any thoughts

Hey Diesel did you have ABS in your '91? If you did I was just looking for a little info on how you did the swap. Tried to PM you but your inbox is full. Thanks for any help man

I sure did. It was acting up at the time of the swap too. Barely had any power to the brakes.

Its pretty straight forward, there was a lot to remove on my system. If yours is a 91 there should be a huge unit for ABS by the passenger side firewall, and a hunch of other junk by the drives side. I didn't know what most of it did and just started cutting lines. Well one of them holds a lot of pressure so have some rags ready to catch the brake fluid that will come shooting out. Lol

Once you get it all out you just put whatever MC/booster you sourced (96+ XJ have big booster, I'd go for that upgrade while you're at it). Make sure to get the prop valve because I'm pretty sure you need it.

Also the washer fluid reservoir needs moved. I just got one from an XJ at the junkyard that had it mounted by the passenger firewall which worked perfect because the taking out the ABS left a big gap there.

You will probably need to run new lines as well iirc the abs has lines running completely different than non-abs

Its been a while since I did that if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Here's one for ya:

"Changing the head gasket can make your jeep run poorly." Thoughts? Cause this sounded odd to me. 99 with 4.0 is jeep in question. Thanks fellas.

Haha.. Well, he calls himself a mechanic and he IS familiar with jeeps, but never ever have I heard this.. Been on CF for 5, 6 years and I don't think I've seen this. It's a good gasket, no eBay crap.. Idfk.. :/ keep the response coming cause I'm pretty curious.

Where do i start with drive line vibes stock height? 55mph to 65mph.

Also when i am going 35-40 and i let off the gas pedal i feel a big "thunk" and the whole jeep jolts a bit. Only at that speed though. Motor/trans mounts in good shape.

Lastly can i cut the bumper mounting bracket right here with no ill effects?

So you had a head gasket done and its running like poo? Did the head itself get checked out? It could be warped or cracked.

Any thoughts as to what's wrong? Full sye kit installed on np231, as far as I know I did everything to a T. What would cause these problems? Its definitely the case itself. I have a spare np231 I could swap in eventually but I'm just trying to figure out wtf would cause this.

Was this the first use after installing SYE?

1) Tires first, run hands around and feel for bump, bubble, unevenness.

2) Driveshaft joints.?

3) I would think so, especially if only one side.

Yea sure was. It sat for a few months before this too. Dunno if that could've had an effect on it. After I finished the sye it shifted fine by hand.

Uh, yup. Time for some noggin pokin around the u-joints.

The only way you're gonna find what you're looking for is to GO LOOK!

Around the Jeep that is. In these parts, we call it "noggin pokin".

That's where you use your God given senses to inspect YOUR Jeep for problems. We can only provide you with guidance as to where to poke your noggin.

There's no Silver Bullet cure you're gonna find from a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Well ****. Instead of performing a totally normal repair I guess you'll have to replace the entire Jeep then.

Maybe he doesn't know that head bolts are single-use (two uses if you're good... but probably not) and can't bolt up a manifold.

Based on those facts, I'll never replace another head gasket on a Jeep as long as I live.....
