Ones to.tell the electric fan to start and the others for your gauge

Would a collapsed lifted cause a knocking sound? Or just a tick tick tick sound.

A friend of mines 98 has a knocking sound. The more of a load the engine is under the worse it gets. I took the flex plate inspection cover off and tightened the bolts. They didn't seem loose to me. I could only get a few of the bolts to tighten.

When I took the Vc off and inspected the rockers a few were loose. Tightening them did not help any. I didn't want to break any bolts but they were defijelty tight and the rockers still had play.

I'm going to drain the oil and remove the oil pan to inspect the bottom end. But my question is should I just stop looking and consider the loose rockers to be my problem due to collapsed lifters or worn parts on the top end?

By the way before i forget, Does this seem normal for oil pressure? My engine's been going as low as 20 (Idle at temp) and as high as 60 (Revved up, cold) recently. I never noticed it fluctuating that much before. It used to hang around 40-50 PSI

Could indeed. Get a mechanic's stethescope and have a listen around. Another trick is to disable a spark plug or fuel injector on one cylinder at a time and listen for a change.

Got a question for the 4.0 experts

I just bought an XJ with 120k for $750 3 weeks ago. It runs and shifts great, no problems at all. I took it wheeling 2 weeks ago and ran into some problems.

The engine started missing pretty bad after an uphill mud puddle where I had to gun it in 4 low. The car was shaking pretty bad and the CEL came on so I shut it off. The engine was HOT, ripples were coming off the hood. But the overheat light never came on. After 15 or so minutes of waiting it fired back up. It happened again about 15 minutes later, and it was even worse. Sounded like it was running on 2 cylinders. Let it cool again and it fired back up no problem. Been DD'ing it for the past two weeks and it hasn't given me a single problem.

I got the code pulled at an auto store and it said cylinder 2 misfire.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I would say you simply overheated, and got heat soak. Stock XJ's cooling systems are jokes.
