Where do I start? We bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee that we were told was a 4x4 (this is our first jeep) back in 2007. The VIN brings up a Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. We just found out it is actually a front wheel drive. In 2003, the year our Jeep is listed as, there were no front wheel Grand Cherokees; or at least that's what our service rep told us. We looked back and found front wheel drives in 2001. So now the question is, do we have a 2003 or a 2001? We bought the Jeep used of course and are wondering how easy it is to fake something like that... Our Jeep service rep is tracing the VIN back to the manufacturer to see what he can find out, and the dealership we bought the Jeep from, is looking into compensation for selling us a front wheel drive instead of a 4x4, since obviously there would be a price difference. Besides all of this, we've had this Jeep in the shop more than 10 times (I kid you not) at a cost of over $8,000 in repairs. Between what we paid for it, what we put down as a down payment and what we've paid in repairs, we'd just about have a brand new Jeep. We're so frustrated that today I gave the keys to our service rep and told him I was through! Thoughts?

I have been messing around with my high idle on my 94 xj for awhile now. I have replaced the tps and iac valve, checked and double checked the vacuum lines and the intake gskt. Still the same. How likely is it that my new tps sensor could be bad?
a bit out of the blue, but why does my lame *** chilton repair manual say and i quote,
"when installing a battery, always connect the grounded terminal first"
then goes on to say in the next page
"NOTE: Always remove the negative (ground) battery terminal first and replace it last."
theyre both talking about the alternator. just wondering which is right.
also, while im on the subject, i had my xj idling the other day, went to reach behind the alternator down by the distributor and i'm not sure if i touched anything/ what it was, but it shocked the hell out of me. oh the joys of hacked up electrics

With the WJ models, as far as I know they were ALL AWD/Part Time 4x4 transfer cases, or 2wd. It is possible that you unknowingly bought a RWD(2wd) Grand Cherokee, if so you may want to look into educating yourself further about vehicles before going shopping again. It is very very easy to tell if a vehicle is just RWD or if its 4x4.
It sounds like you didn't know what you were buying, and either you got suckered into paying for lots of repairs that the vehicle didn't need or you bought a lemon. If its in good working condition I'd say just keep driving it if you really have THAT much money into it.
As far as what year it is, go to any Chrysler dealership and request a build sheet, you have to give them the VIN number but it will pull up what year, and ALL of the options your Jeep has.
However if nothing changed by replacing the TPS or IAC, neither of those is likely to be the culprit. I'm guessing that you have a vacuum leak somewhere which is throwing the EMC off and causing the high-idle condition. If it were a sensor chances are you'd have a CEL showing up.

I've done it both ways multiple times on multiple vehicles without incident. The main thing is to make sure you don't short the wires together.
HELP! Wierd electrical problem - Jeep Dies
Need help: I have a 2001 sport. Here is what’s happening. About 1 months after getting the truck used last year I was driving along and all of the sudden a warning light in red pops on "Check Gauges" and the VOLT meter was pinned all the way to the full positive side of the gauge. I said to myself wow.. what the hell! truck was running fine.. So i was at a light and i shut it off and it started back up fine, warning gone and away I went.. 4 months later same thing happened.. It only happened about 3 times in the last 12 months and i simply shut it off to fix the warning..
Yesterday I ran the truck up a snow mountain for fun.. I drive away and all of the sudden the 'Check Gauges" light comes on and the volt gauge is pegged all the way to max volts. So as i have done before I shut it off to correct.. HOWEVER, it wont restart, no power whatsoever.. not even flasher power. completely dead.. for 5 minutes I’m sitting at the entrance to a parkway here on Long Island with no power at all... So i look at the tachometer and its sitting at about 300rpm.. I just glanced at it.. my next thing was to turn on and off the headlights for whatever reason to try and jolt something.. as i was doing this I watched the tachometer go down about 50rpm each time I turned the headlights on and off.. when the tach read zero I turned the key and the truck started right up like no problem.. LOL
I proceeded to Best buy to buy something. I came out, opened my door with manual key, unlocked the passenger door for my son with the power lock. I put the key in to start and DEAD no power nothing.. I hit the power lock again and this time dead?? Im saying WTF! No reading on tach.. pulling headlight lever on off nothing.. I pop hood and play around with batter wires.. etc.. more wires tapping.. Then the truck starts..
I got it home and parked it.. Im using my convertible now! What could this be?? I hate to start replacing wires for no reason..
No fuses blown, battery terminals are clean and tight though covered in oil and dirt by the starter..
I found this write up on trouble spots with these trucks.. could the gauge cluster harness be doing a complete NO power situation? Take a look at these issues..

I thought all Jeeps were RWD under normal 2 hi positiion. just by sitting in it you should see a lever that has next to it, 2hi/4hi/4 full time/n/4lo. this is a 4wd jeep. it might not say 4full time depending on the Tranfer Case you have. it is doesnt have this leveer at all then it would be a 2 wwheel drive car. even looking at the differentials at the bottom will show you what kind of wheels drive you have. as for the year, like zach said, go to a jeep dealership with you VIN they will get you a build sheet that has the year, the model and all the goodies a jeep has under the hood.

That do NOT have a 2wd option. The options are Full-time 4wd, or 4 Low. Thats it.

huh good to know. but the ones that are 2wd are they RWD? but as for katz they should be able to know what type of drive they have it isnt to hard to tell.
Thank you for helping but I need to have someone else fix my brakes. I have always taken it to the Jeep Dealer but am thinking it might not be necessary any longer. I was told, in the past, that jeep brakes were very loud unless they were installed by a Jeep Dealer. Judy
