I have a 1994 Cherokee Sport, I know it has ABS in the front. Buy my question is, do the rear brake drums use ABS? The reason I ask is because I am replacing the brake shoes and I noticed I need a wheel cylinder. When I called the parts store to price one, they said they have a non-ABS wheel cylinder in stock. There is an electrical wire going to the back brakes. Does this mean I need a wheel cylinder for ABS brake system? I'm just confused. Thanks for any replies on advance.

 

depending on your axle, the rear drums would have abs. The way I decided on mine is that there is supposed to be an extra cable out to the back for the speed sensor.
If you are in Canada I can pm you a site that has cylinders for halfish everwhere else.

Thanks for the reply, it turns out that I do have abs on the rear brakes. I am located in Washington state in the US and the part was only $11 USD, pretty cheap.

 

Wrong. While in theory, a perfectly modulated foot can achieve optimal stopping traction, in the real world in emergency situations, no human is capable of the braking ABS achieves.

 

Anytime an "absolute" is used, (as in "never", or "always"), it is almost always wrong. (except when saying, "never say never")

Not sayen I'm not impressed with what ABS can do, but there is not yet a computer that can rivel a humans brain. The Eagle landed on the moon because Armstrong was there to fill in when the puter' took a crap, for instance.

 

In an emergency situation, a human brain has waaay to much to pay attention to and still be able to modulate perfect braking. There have been numerous head-to-head tests on this, and even when the human isn't overwhelmed by an emergency, they rarely stop as well as the ABS. What someone CAN do in theory and what they actually do in reality are very different especially when the human brain is involved.

I wish I had ABS. Yeah, it can become a problem on trails, but you can simply pull the fuse before hitting the trails and put it back in when you're back on the road.

 

No argument. It IS impressive. I didn't even "put mine to task, on solid ground due to my tools and such would likely join me up front. Sort of got a giggle trying it on gravel, sure as hell works. (or worked). After 45 years on the road, a fun gadget to find! Those months were golden, when it worked. Again , no argument, just the "absolute", triggered my post.

 

I put axles from a 2006 LJ (dana 44 rear, super 30 front) anybody out there with advice on which master cylinder I should use with these axles? Should I completely bypass the ABS system?

 

Factory master cylinder should work fine, yes delete the ABS its nothing but a headache.

 

Not trying to Hijack the tread, but does anyone know of a parts list required to bypass the ABS pump to delete the ABS system? My ‘95 ABS system hasn’t worked since about 2001. I’ve done several searches and haven’t found a parts list. I took a stab at it once a couple years ago and found that Chrysler used metric fittings on the pump and SAE fittings on the brake distribution block. I would like to get the pump out of the path of brake fluid flow altogether, but I know it’s going to take some new brake lines.
