cut the black wires where? Inside the jeep where the shifter is at?

No. The ones that come off the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch). There are 6 wires of various colors. If you follow them up they head towards the front of the firewall and a small junction box of sorts. The ground for the starter goes down one black wire through the NSS and then back up. If the NSS is bad inside this ground can not be completed and the starter won't work. If you cut the black wires and loop them together at some point the ground circuit is complete and the started can start. Obviously it is a safety device so you shouldn't be bypassing it but if you end up stuck somewhere before you get around to fixing it this will get you going.

I need to get to my brothers shop to get it fixed. Is there a way to do this without cutting wires? And do i do this where it plugs into the harness?

I have never by passed any of mine. But there were a couple of threads on here that when they did by pass it they ended up get CEL. Just something to keep in mind. They did also say that they had no other problems other then the light.

Ok just one more question! It was warm today no snow so was messing with the jeep. If i take and push the shifter up towards the dash it will start in park. So does the NSS need to be cleaned? Or does it need to be adjusted at the NSS switch on the tranny or the shifter it the cab in the floor colum?

I bypassed mine 4 years ago and haven't had a CEL for anything. There's really nothing in that system for the computer to pick up on. It's just the starter ground and the backup lights. Perhaps if someone completely disconnected the switch and all the wires something odd might happen but just doing the 2 ground wires shouldn't disrupt anything else. I will take a photo of where I joined my wires if it helps anyone who may be stuck one day.

Ugh. Don't go cutting harness wires, I hate those stupid hack suggestions. You can bypass the starter cut-off without cutting anything. If you disconnect the NSS from the harness (by UNPLUGGING it) and jump pins B and C, your Jeep will start independent of gear selector position.

This is sort of what your plug looks like and the pin locations...
..iji╦═══╦
╔═╬═╦═╬═╗
--E- F- G -H
╠═╬═╬═╬═╣
--D-C- B- A
╚═╩═╩═╩═╝

It looks like if you use thin enough wire you can reconnect the plug. Or you can jump those pins externally. You may get a CEL but removing the jumper should make it go away. No biggie until you have the time to take it off and clean the contacts. The CEL is likely caused by the ECU or TCU expecting to see an open circuit on B and C when in any gear other than park or neutral.

Be careful not to start when you're in gear and remember, this is not a permanent solution, you'll need to rebuild your NSS.

Here's another good write-up on doing it.

Yes a photo would be great. My state requires inspections, so this would be a temp fix. Till it warms up or i can get to my brothers shop 60 miles away and get my nns cleaned or replaced. So a photo is great, can you upload it today? I dont want to mess anything up and can i do this without cutting wires?

Kinda of my problem, it starts in park just fine if i push the shifter towards the dash while it's in park. Just a little foward pressure and bigo it works. (So is that just an adjustment on my gear stick or does my NSS need cleaned?) Also i agree also, if you had a picture so if it happened to me on the road somewhere i could bypass it and get home.

You don't need a shop. Just take it apart and clean it. Get some electrical contact cleaner from the hardware store or Radio Shack, use it like a spray cleaner, and rub the contact surfaces with one of those green scrubber cloths or a pipe cleaner. Now flush it all out with the contact cleaner. Put it back together and you are ready to go.

No big deal.

Thats what i decided to do is clean it up. It`s better then spending $184 on a new one. So i clean the inside out with contact cleaner? I have read a few guides and they say grease it up with Dielectric grease. So do i grease the entire inside and they edges where it goes back togeather?

If you need to move the jeep just turn the key on an take a screw driver an touch all the posts on the starter it will start right up as long as the starter is good then that rules everything else out an confirms its the nss my 95 just did this to me

Yep, just clean it up with contact cleaner, maybe scrub the contacts with some pipe cleaners, 3M scrubber pad (be gentle), or an old toothbrush.

Flush it out once more with the contact cleaner, then coat the contacts with dialectric grease. You don't need to fill the thing with it.

Good to go!
