Couple questions! 87 Cherokee
Hey guys, im new to the whole jeep thing, and very new to working on cars. I have a 1987 Jeep Cherokee 5 speed 4x4.
When I start my car I cant have my foot on the gas or the clutch or the car wont even turn over, If I unplug the break light fuse from the fuse box, i have to have my foot on the clutch and it will.
Any suggestions? Im thinking a new fuse box because mine is pretty corroded?
also, my Cluster doesnt work at all, when i have no gas, the thing shows i have a full tank. If i have a full tank it shows i have no gas. The RPM gauge doesnt work, nor does the speedometer. Anything in particular i should look at?
and last there is this little box looking thing right by my driver side, rear leaf spring. What is that?
I cant upload pictures here at work, but heres my email if anyone cares to see, i can send you pictures VIA phone.
Thanks, much appreciated

Welcome to the forum, and it sounds like fluid leaking out of your clutch master may have eaten your fusebox. Does it look like it has tree sap all over it?

The issue with you gas gauge is probably because a previous owner swapped in a newer model fuel pump assembly. IIRC 91 and up XJ's (cherokees) will show tank as empty rather then full, and full rather then empty on Renix era XJ's. If that's a big deal for you go to a junkyard and pull a fuel pump assembly out of any 84-90 jeep XJ or MJ (comanche), the instal is pretty easy compared to most.
Welcome to CF. Being that you have a Renix jeep check out the links in my signature very useful info for you. (If your on the app you will have to do a search for Cruiser54's mostly renix write ups)

Well, welcome!
Sounds like you need to spend some quality time with some wiring diagrams, a test light, and a meter. Take it step by step. Don't fall into the trap of trying to throw this fix and that fix at it. Most kids do that. It's a great way to spend a lot of time and money fixing simple problems.
First, what do you mean by "corroded"?
If it's actual corrosion, here's your first step: Cleaning up the corrosion.
Disconnect the battery, and clean that thing up. Get some contact cleaner from your local hardware or auto parts store, and get to work with pipe cleaners, toothbrush, and maybe some 3M scrubber cloth (but gently with the 3M!).
Clean every connection completely.
Look for corroded wires, too. If there is corrosion at the crimped connection, there's likely corrosion that has wicked back up the wire. If the wire has a corroded connection, and looks swollen, it IS corroded. You still could have corrosion in there even if it's not swollen. The only cure for that is to cut the wire back to where it's clean (cut an inch, check, cut an inch, check...), and crimp on new a new end. Don't listen to the kids who tell you that you have to solder everything - a properly done crimp is a great connection. (HINT: It's almost impossible to get a properly done crimp with an El Cheapo crimp tool. Get a good one, and use quality nylon connectors.)
If it's a brake fluid problem, well, fix the leak, THEN clean up the fuse box.
"At all"? Nothing? Or do you mean you have a LOT of problems? The more precisely you describe your symptoms, the better the quality of help you'll get. If you use words carelessly, people will misunderstand you, and you'll get bad advice. Take the time to think through, and CAREFULLY describe what's going on. Don't use broad terms like, "Nothing works!" unless REALLY nothing works.
I don't know if those are electrical or not on your year. Someone else can chime in. If they are electrical, don't worry about anything until you've cleaned up that fuse box.
If they are mechanical, check the cables. Are they even connected?
Part of the self-destruct mechanism. That means you have the James Bond edition. Kind of like an Eddie Bauer Ford, but much cooler. Don't worry about it.Looks like you need to spend some serious time cleaning up a few things. Remember to disconnect the battery ground lead before you start cleaning up the fuse box. Once that's done, you'll see what else is in bad shape.
When a vehicle has multiple problems like this, you just have to take it one step at a time. It's kind of like peeling an onion. Fixing one problem (like cleaning your fusebox) is like taking off one layer. Now something else is exposed, and you go to work on that, and so on.
One more thing - you just posted your email address on a public website. That's an invitation to lots of spam. I suggest you edit your post and take that out of there. We can PM you without needing your email address.
