Women freaked out by A/C NOISE

Hey Guys, will someone please tell me why my a/c makes a scretching noise when I turn it on. It's beyond freakish. Thanks guys!

Or the blower motor/resistor is crapping out. If the noise comes from the vents, thats the problem. If it's up front, it could be with the A/C components.

from a tighten the belt task to freon, bearings and blower resistor in three post ...no wonder part stores do so well...

I'd verify belt first. A worn, glazed or especially a loose belt will make the screeching noise upon engaging the compressor.
Perform a close inspection. Any shiny (glazing) spots is not good. If the belt has over 60k on it, just replace it with a Goodyear Gatorback belt; the best replacement belt in my opinion.
If belt is newer and passes inspection, be darn sure that it is tensioned properly. I use the Krikit II tension gauge. The belt on the 4.0 needs to be pretty darn tight to keep quiet.
