I have a 1994 XJ with presumably all original drivetrain and cluster, 270K. No prior owner maintenance known. This thing is stock and needing all TLC/maintenance a 25yo Jeep would need. It has had a tuneup last year when we bought it.

My 1998 has 230K and although I only owned it 3 years, the past three years it has been meticulously gone through. Everything from battery cables to every single new fluid.

Both cherokees have 4 hole injectors for what that's worth. The 94 has Ford Mustang injectors (lol) and the 98 has some from a dodge neon.

The 94 has bare road 225 tires, my 98 has goodyear wrangler owl 235s. No lift on either.

The 94 is infinitely more responsive/peppy. It takes a crumb of gas pedal to get up to speed, whereas the 98 isn't troublesome but requires much more skinny pedal and just doesn't "feel" the same. Heck, even the suspension in the 94 feels "couchier". The handling just feels more responsive.

I'm hoping an expert can define the engineering differences between these two years and is if there's any obvious reason for this? Is it possible my 98 is generally "more tired"...? The 94 is just FUN to drive. They're both great, but damn. Seems backwards, and nearly 300k!

 

Don't forget the difference in emission controls! The 94 is OBDI and the 98 is OBDII.

 

Check your TV cable. When I got my Jeep it was crazy responsive and after I adjusted it it was much more tolerable.

 

are you certain they have the same diff ratio ?

 

Don't forget about all of the extra stuff they added to later model XJs. The curb weight difference between a 94 and 98 XJ is about 400 lbs. Later models had a lot more thought given to NVH levels and had some more safety features.

 

As mentioned, gearing and weight can be a big factor.

I would start with a compression test. Maybe the 98 is wore out?

it could also be a restricted exhaust, many possibilities. But I think you need to know what your starting with as far as engine condition.

 

Not enough info here. Gear ratios on both. Lifted or not. Tire size? All that stuff affects the butt dyno

 

Put the bald 225s on the 98 and see what happens

 

I have driven both a 94 and a 97 for a few years. Really not much difference. I'd be looking into what's wrong with the 98.
