Default Where to start?

I have the ever annoying thump going in the front end every time I hit a bump. I have 160K on the clock so I'm sure it all needs replacing up front. Cant afford to replace it all right now. So, can someone tell me what they would start with first? And then so on....

I've read so many threads on the subject that I've just confused myself about where to start first.

Thanks.

And what exactly does a front axle u joint look like anyway? Seems a lot of times these are bad.

You have several u-joints up front, here is a general picture of what one looks like. Yes, this one's bad and I stole the pic.>

Probably not what's causing a thump over bumps though. That's likely a shock mounting point, or anything with a rubber bushing that's worn. You'll have to get under there and start inspecting and shaking things.
If you can get it to make noise while jouncing the front bumper that'll make finding the culprit easier.

Sway bar bushings and shocks took care of my front end noises.

The only way you're gonna find what you're looking for is to GO LOOK!

Around the Jeep that is. In these parts, we call it "noggin pokin".

That's where you use your God given senses to inspect YOUR Jeep for problems. We can only provide you with guidance as to where to poke your noggin.

There's no Silver Bullet cure you're gonna find from a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Completed the "noggin pokin"!! Gonna start with replacing the sway bar end links and bushings. Then move on to replacing more front end from there. My jeep is total stock. Is there anything I need to think about when purchasing new sbe's and bushings?

If it is really your sway bar that is the issue, this stuff is what you will need. There are higher performance alternatives, but you may not need them unless you plan to offroad a lot.

While you are down there inspecting, check your tie-rods and track bar and ball joints and control arms. If they are worn out, replace them. Not terribly expensive or difficult.
