Hi everyone. I recently removed the adapter on my cherokee and put a fram ph3614 on as directed. I lubed the seal and turned by hand. The next day it looked like the filter was leaking so i tightened it with an oil wrench at most quarter turn. Yesterday i went to the store to get a drill bit and when i came out i had a pretty decent puddle of oil. So i limpes it back home and parked it while the whole time watching the oil pressure gauge get lower and lower. Put more oil in today and saw its leaking out bottom of filter.
My question is what other filters work with adapter delete?
I cross referenced and came up with purolator L10241 ($3.27) and motocraft 910s i think it was. Will the purolator work?
I searched on here as well as google.

First off replace the adapter and use new O-Rings its there for a reason and you just found out one of them.

Second Never use FRAM Filters they are JUNK!!

 

I was under the impression from posts on here as well as NAXJ that people run them without the adapter with no problem. I figured i must of missed either part of an oring from the deteriorated adapter oring or just over tightened it.

 

I changed out the o-rings on my 99 yesterday. I got the o-rings from the dealer for $11. I had to get underneath with my 36mm wrench to break it loose but it was cake going back in. I think you would be more happy with the adapter in there.

Aside: Did you remove the locating pin before screwing on the oil filer? Is the bolt that the filter screws onto tight? Did you measure the diameter (inside and outside) of the block where the filter sits and compare it to the diameter of the filter gasket?

 

I bought the rings and stumbled upon the other topic. I decided to eliminate it after that. Took the roll pin out. Dont remember what i did with adapter anyway. Im going to try the filter on block again and see how it goes. Ill be using the purolator classic L-10241 filter for this. I think last time was operator error.

 

Did you take any measurements ie. mounting flange and ID / OD of the old filter gasket to see why the other wouldn't seal?

 

I didnt take any measurements. It didnt really leak when i first did it. It was either residual from putting it on or it seaped out. But it was at the top of the filter. Really my biggest inquery was what other filters fit besides the fram. I cross referenced and the purolator came up so ill give it a shot and get back here with the results.

 

You might want to research the availability and cost of rebuilding your engine in your area.

When you catastrophically lose all your oil on the freeway because of mucking around with your oil filter adapter (eliminating it), you will need that info.

By the time you realize what happened, it will be too late. If you even realize it.

It's amazing to me, and telling, that you use Fram filters and "limp it home" knowing oil is pouring out of it.

You said you read about eliminating the adapter on various forums and thought that was a good thing to do. Did you not catch the Fram filter threads? There's almost always one started two or three times A WEEK.

 

I wasnt happy about having to use the fram filter. That's what the posts said worked. Back to the main idea of this topic which was alternatives to the fram. I've got one cross referenced, if it doesnt work out i can always go back. It appears its been done many times before and now it doesnt work? The only flaw i found on here was if motor mounts are really worn the filter could hit. Then again your real issue is a worn mount.

You Gain next to nothing. Actually that's a smaller filter, correct? The adapter O ring will only fail once in the lifetime of your Jeep, maybe twice if you are lucky! In any case, just give Napa the Fram#, andget a Gold/Wix.

 

Napa gold is what the cop cars here use and its good enough for them it is for us.

 

Ther've been a couple Saturday night's after 10 I wish they were runnen Fram's...(my fault to be in the "target" population!)

 

I'm still trying to figure out why people think it's a good idea to remove the filter adapter. You lose the ability to use a better (larger) filter. What do you gain in exchange for this loss?

Oh, yeah, leaks from old bad o-rings.

So replace the o-rings and be good for another 15 or 20 years!!!!!

I think it's just a lazy man's solution to a non-problem.

 

It doesn't work. Who knows why replacing 3 o-rings once in your Jeep's lifetime versus having punctured oil filters is less desirable.
