Regardless of what size/brand of filter you use, you still stand the chance of having it ruptured during off roading. Maybe even on road, due to worn engine/trans mounts.

It is not a recommended procedure.

The factory didn't go to all the trouble they did with the oil filter adapter just for giggles.

As I said early on that adapter was there for a reason, a mount can break at any time and the filter is toast along with all the oil gone. That with being able to use a larger filter (Always Better), if you can't find your adapter go to a JY and pick one up.

I don't see what the big deal is? If it works it works. I clearly didnt ask for your opinions on the mod. All i asked for was anyones experience with using alternatives to the fram ph3614. If you dont want to do the mod, don't and no one is forcing you too. The purpose of this thread was to find out which filters work besides the fram.
Im not trying to start an argument by any means. This topic was suppose to have some useful information for people looking for an alternative. If you want to give your input for why not to do this mod why not do so in the topic for the mod so people can see your side of the argument before they take on this mod.

The reason my oil filter failed was because i did ir when it was gettig dark. Installed the filter on top of the failed oring of the adapter because i didnt see it with lack of light.

While i disagree with some of you, i appreciate your input and time you took to state your opinion.
Thanks,
NJMike

Maybe we should just sit idly by and let you go your own way...

IT DOESN'T FRICKIN WORK!!!!!

How can we advise you on what filter to use when NOTHING works?

It's NOT a good thing to do.

Perhaps you need to go find some folks who will spoon feed you some unreliable info which will lead to catastrophic results. I'm sure you'll feel much better digesting that crap.

Truth bother you? Are the messengers of truth the evil ones here?

Wake up!!!!

I just don't get why someone would want to do this. The O-rings cost next to nothing. You have to take the adaptor off anyways, why not just replace the rings and re-assemble it correctly? I replaced my O-rings 15,000 mi. ago and haven't had an issue since. Sure the adaptor was a bieotch to get off but was gravy going back on. the whole process took less than an hour.

Mike please forgive "sunshine" up there. He has your best interest at hart, and has even been right before.

Any parts store, pole to pole, has a bunch of filters right there on there screen that match that Fram. We could dig up makes and #'s, but it would be much more simple if you just walk into any store. The Napa gold is a good choice, Napa is everywhere.

This. He's been working on these jeeps a long time, and has real experience on what to do and NOT to do. As far as him giving his advice in this thread, and not another, what about newer people who haven't read the other thread? They could read this and think that it's perfectly acceptable to delete your OFA with no consequences. EVERY mod you do has pros AND cons. I thank him for bringing that to light in this thread. That said, I also will say why delete? Replace the orings and be done. The engineers that designed the motor did this for a reason. There really is no beneficial gain from doing this, other than not having to put an OFA back on.

FWIW, i don't have the adapter on my 90. i use a PH16 or equivalent. (95 motor).

i once did have my filter get punctured from a sharp corner of my frame (a bracket/reinforced area) and lost all my oil. i got to the staging area, jumped in another jeep and 2 hour drive into town to get oil and filter.

i ended up grinding that sharp corner off and all has been well since.

i now use a smaller oil filter (delco/napa gold) but a full size one still works fine.

do it or don't do it, but if you do, be sure to grind that sharp corner off. you will know what i'm talking about as soon as you see it.

i've had mine this way for more than 10 years with only that one incident.

I replaced my oring in my adapter about 2 years ago after noticing a leak and then about 2 months ago it started leaking again so I decided I was going to find a better solution to the problem of crappy gaskets.I was siting down in my garage trying to think of a way to fix my problem and I looked over and saw a old oil filter I had from a oil change I did in my work beater(93 Saturn) oil filter "Purolator L10241". I pried the rubber oring out of it and it fit right into the slot for the adapter gasket,it took some stretching and mashing but it fit good and tight so I put it all back together and it has worked out GREAT! I did have to hold the adapter in place to tighten it up until it got tight so the pin could hold it in the right spot since the gasket is really thick but I have great faith that it will last along time.

I like it when people ask for advice on a public forum, then get PO'd when the answers don't go exactly the way they want them to.
