When is it too late to switch to synthetic?

I got my XJ with 155K on it. The original owner never used synthetic. I've been running Mobil 1 full synthetic with Mobil 1 or Mopar filters since the first time I changed the oil. I go 5000+ between changes in the winter, too. Zero issues whatsoever. I'm now at 227K and it still runs like a champ.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there regarding oil interchangeability. There is never a bad time to switch to synthetic and no harm will come from switching back and forth, even. As long as the weight is correct, everything will be fine.

I recently got an '07 GC 4.7L w/60k and have all of its records from previous owner, only conventional used. I'm right at my 1st oil change interval since getting it from him and unsure if I should switch to synthetic or keep using conventional. There are no visible oil leaks so I'm not concerned about that, just trying to figure out if switching a motor from conventional to synthetic after 63K is a smart move or not.

One thing I know for sure, if you want to find out where all of your engine oil leaks are use synthetic!

If you don't find any then good for your engine, it's tighter than a clam's a*ss.

I wouldn't be too concerned about oil leaks from using synthetics. Most synthetics are also superior to conventional oil in that they are slicker, keeping parts protected better when a cold startup occurs. I have always been partial to Mobil1 because of their excellent test results and high-caliber OEM following (Porsche, Mercedes-AMG, Aston Martin, Bentley, Corvette and other GM HiPo vehicles, Nissan GTR, and McLaren).

I wouldn't say it's necessarily wise, but it's not foolish either. Just preference for most people. I choose synthetic to reduce overall engine wear, especially on my cars that I drive aggressively.

Cheers,
