140 miles as measured by GPS? And how do you know you actually used 6 gallons? Do you have a flow meter on your fuel line?

The only way to measure fuel economy is miles driven divided by fuel consumed, and unless you have a flow meter on your fuel line the only way to get a semi-accurate fuel consumption figure is off of fillups of the tank where either the same pump shuts off at the same point or you spill it out the filler neck every time.

Any other way (tick marks on fuel gauge, uncorrected speedo gear) is a guess at best. Doesn't matter how many times you've rebuilt the engine.

Man I really ain't BSin, when I got the jeep the guy said all he had done was put a 4.5 RC lift and tc drop on it and I went from 33's to 35's then went up to 37's and it needs a bigger lift but the next lift is gonna be 8 inches and hope to have it by spring. I took the head off my 93 ho xj had it reworked and put it on when I was rebuilding the motor because the stock head had cracked between the valves but other than that its stock, cam, crank, transmission, gears because I haven't messed with them

97 Country, 4.0, AW4. 235 tires. about 185K
If you can believe the little computer thingie on the overhead....
AVG about 16.8

I was averaging over 17 when I 1st got the jeep....it had a blown out muffler and cat....changed both and mileage went down. It now has a little restriction, I suppose. Also, it may improve slightly as the computer relearns.

Have more miles under my belt now. I can more accurately say that when I drive in the city (NYC stop & go), I average between 12 and 15 MPG. On the highway, if I drive conservatively, I average about 22 MPG. I have a 01 stock XJ with 86k miles and 235/75/15 tires on her. I run MMO every other fill up and every other oil change.

Did you recalibarate your speedometer, and are you using the fill-up method, or looking at the tick marks on the fuel gauge?

Where is Uwharrie? $3.20/gal.
We're payin $5.45 Imp Gal,($1.20 litre) equivalent to $4.36 us gal.
Perhaps Bigcook91 is runnin on imperial gallons?
Once upon a time, long long ago, in a land, not so far away, I remember the younger stock Peep able to peak at 28 mpg (imperial gal), about 23/usgal.
Today with only 600Kkm under her belt, 3.5 on 31's she daily gets 21 mpg imperial gal, same as 17 mpgus.
Fuel Economy was never on the list of requirements when the Cherokee was conceived.
Fuel Economy is not on my list of daily expectations. I need to assure arrival at my destinations, in all conditions, so I drive the Peep, and enjoy it!
Addendum: For reference; all my daughters stock Grand Cherokees (95 & 02 4.0L) and the Libby (V6 3.7L) get better mileage by 10% or more than my Cherokee
