Would help if we knew what year of XJ you have. I know no XJ 95 and older ever had such a switch. Maybe the guys familiar with the newer XJs can help you.

REALLY!?!? I would love to install one of these switches in my XJ for just that reason. I'd like to be able to "kick it up a notch" when using my winch.
Mike, what year XJs had these switches. I'm a junkyard shopper. I will find one...lol.

cant say read a little on it on naxja
they are only on specialty vehicles like police
and something about the ecu has a circuit built in it to kick it up to 1000 rpm in N and P and that its connected to the rear window defrost circuit somehow

Wow, pretty complicated. Would be easier to just rig up a solenoid at the TB and wire it to a toggle switch or something like that, then.

I have a 98 Classic and have hooked up a switch that sends a ground to pin #12 on the ECU cluster under the hood. Works like a chap and took about 10 min total to hook up. I sorted through all that info at naxja and was able to work out what I needed to do, and it was super easy.

I installed the Ext Idle on mine. It was easy to do and bumps idle to approx 1100 rpm.
It was a factory install on police models. From what I have read, fire deptartments used them as well. Raising the idle helps when they were sitting still and operating lights, radios, etc. The increase in rpm also helps keep engine temp down b/c the water pump turns faster.
I bought a switch and a new bezel made for four switches for a factory appearing install. I picked up a connector at a junkyard b/c the terminals are small on the back of the switch. It uses the same connector as the factory fog lights on the XJ's & ZJ's.
It is a four wire hook-up. One wire is grounded. One is ignition hot. One is attached to your headlight illumination circuit so the switch lights up when the lights are on. The last wire splices into the solid gray wire on the forward plug on the ECU in the engine compartment. The gray wire is PCM 12. When you activate the switch, it grounds the gray wire. When that circuit is grounded, the idle increases. It only increases idle in park or neutral. Nothing happens when you are in drive.
I figured it would help if I ever install a winch or if I ran an air compressor to air back up. I have also used it when jumping off another car and didn't want to sit in the heep with my foot on the throttle.

I pretty much got it, that with a 96 and newer XJ, all you have to do is ground pin 12 on the ECU to get the EXE idle. Can this same thing be done with the 95 and older XJs or is there a different way or can it not be done?
