Sorry guys.. I have a 91 jeep cherokee xj limited and will need to replace the gears in my d35 and d30. I've decided to regear to 4.11 because of my larger tires 31's. Will I need to replace the carrier or just buy the new gears?

you should take the money and get a stronger rear axle, honestly...you can get a stock 8.25 axle with 3.55 or 4.10 gears for the same price as gears/rebuild kit and I know plenty of people that wheel up to 34's on 3.55 gears with no issue whatsoever.....but not on a 35

Here's the pumpkins....although the 8.25 should have a distinct flat bottom

4.10's came in the 4 cylinder and up country editions of early 90's xj's if you get lucky and you look at the diff there will still be a metal tag attatched to on of the bolts with the ratio on it

Not true... a Dana 35's stock carrier with 3.55's will except any gears numerically higher (4.10, 4.56, etc). So if you have 3.07's, you would need a different carrier. The Dana 30 on the otherhand will need a different carrier if it has stock 3.55's. But in my opinion if you are going to stay with 31" tires there would be no problem re-gearing to 4.10's.

Thanks Guys! I believe the 8.25 option might be more cost effective but will not rule out anything. We use the vehicle mainly for dd and trips to the beach and rivers. Nothing too extreme yet..

they are now offering 4.88's for the 8.25 so you can get pretty deep gears....especially if you aren't doing anything crazy yet, just try to get a 29 spline 8.25 (97+) basically on par with 44's depending on which snob you talk to. so with the stronger rear you can save time/money if you want to go crazy
