hey all,

i need to replace my axel housing due to rounded spring perches.
i took a walk in the junk yard today and found a few good donor housings but im not sure how to check the gear ratio in them and im not sure if my jeep was re geared for the 33'' tires

i pulled my cover off (its a dana 35) and on the ring gear is
02012bdanacg42828p8l36043-14 545 j4

i hope i can find an axle with the same ratio because i dont want to have to swap guts over or pay to have it done.

is it possible to do it in the driveway or do i have to take it in if i cant get the rite ratio.

i seen a few 8.25 and was wandering if swaping one in with the rite ratio is a good thing?

thanks

John

On your ring gear there should be some numbers that will tell you tooth count, divide these and you will get ratio,or turn your tire and count how many times the drive shaft rotates for one revolution of your tire. As far as changing it in your driveway it is very easy and takes very little time, you will need two jack stands and a good jack, look for a 8.25 after 97 or 29 spline,a 44 would be even better.
After looking at your numbers again and seeings that you have an ax-15,it looks like you have stock 3.07 gears.

Note the numbers now in blue.
43 divided by 14 = your gear ratio
In your case it's 3.07

With that ratio I'm going to guess that you have a manual tranny. If that's true then 4.10's would be a far better gear choice. If your running an AW4 then 4.56 gears are the ones you want.
