Something is banging/rattling underneath (I think) the back of my jeep. At first I thought it was the exhaust, had that replaced and its still there. Only when I drive over rough road surface and not even every time. Does anyone have any suggestions? The jeep is basically stock although the previous owner did put air shocks in the back. Thanks in advance.

Climb underneath and start pulling on stuff.

Check the shock mounts top and bottom. Problem with air shocks, you're holding up the weight of the vehicle on a mount that wasn't designed for that.
Also, check your leaf springs, likely totally dead(hence the air shocks), the leaves may be separating, slapping against each other.

Thanks TwistedWrench. I'll check the mounts and leaf springs. All good suggestions, well except for the garden hose. Lol. Whatever it is its driving me crazy. I guess I'll spring for the lift since I'm probably going to change the shocks and springs anyway. Thanks again.

Shocks don't support the weight of the vehicle, also if he were to have true air shocks he more than likely wouldn't have leafs. I do agree to check the upper shock mounts, very common for them to break.Originally Posted by TwistedWrench

I don't think he's referring to airbags, but rather the ghetto awesomeness of air shocks, ie; HiJackersOriginally Posted by JPXJMOAB

Yes Twisted, the ghetto awesomeness of air shocks. Lol. Apparently the guy I bought it from put them on because he had a small trailer that would weigh down the back so his answer to that was put more air in. The leaf springs are still there. I think you're right about the shock mount. I really can't think of any thing else.
