If you are willing to do a little welding you can get a ford 8.8 out of an exploder and get the install kit (guy on naxja sells em) and you will have a very strong axle and disc brakes to boot!

Got a junk yard with old MOPARS in it, long shot but if you find a charger ,challenger gtx,etc swap in the rear from one of those a long shot for sure. you could also use a xj 8.25 29 spline, pretty much just as strong as a d-44, the 8.8 is only one step up from these two axle's and the 8.25 is alot cheaper.

Yea id rather go down that route then, especially with the disk breaks as a plus. How much welding? Know of any good videos or threads of how to? Thanks!

That be badass, but im guessing that would get pretty expensive? Or no?Those old muscle cars arent cheap. Where would be a good site to get a kit to do the swap?

Swap out to a ford 8.8. They are tougher than the D44. They came in explorers and crown vics so they are plentiful. All that is required in installing it really is cutting the old spring perches off and welding in new ones for the leafs. Check out Ruffstuff (vendor here), they sell the spring perches and swap kit. pretty much everything you need to swap it in minus hooking up the brakes but those are pretty self explanatory.

im just guna say, they are NOT tougher than a 44. people just like them for there disc brakes, if ur guna go through all the work of welding perches and all the other crap that goes along with it, ur better off going to a ford 9", now that is strong

Then you have a wider rear axle and different bolt patterns if you don't do the front. And it's already been stated that just the rear is going to be done.

The 8.8 is plenty strong, and stock to stock, the 8.8 is stronger then a D44.

Coincidence? Probably.

I've had both a 8.8 and a 9" and never had any problems with either. Running a 9" is for a different discussion because of previous points I stated. When I build another stock width XJ, it will get a 8.8.
