So I went to go pick up a oil filter and oil. I got a k&n hp-2004 pictured below:



Anyways it's short and fat whatever.

So I go to change the filter and it's a completely different filter, it long and skinny. Shown below:



Now, I did a SEARCH and found out that size doesn't matter actually u can run skinny or long just as long as gaskets and threads line up. Which they did..


So I try screwing on the k&n and it's rubbing against the engine block, as if it was too big. So I run to the auto store he looks up the filter and I had the right one (the k&n) but he cross referenced he STP one and found me another one just like it. So I bought the long and skinny one.

I go home I try every which way to put this short fat one on and it just isn't happening. It's cross threading, it's too fat and it hits the block. So, I put in the STP one (a brand new one) and it for like a dream no problems.

Does anyone have any idea why my 1995 Cherokee sport 4.0L straight 6 doesn't take a standard sized short fat jeep spec oil filter? I don't even know what the long skinny filter is used in, but it fits my jeep, kind strange (I'm the third owner. Previous owner changed nothing but the head gasket )

Any ideas?

hmm idk i have a 95 sport and my filter is short and fat and its not even close to the block. i would assume the size all depends on brand i use cheap fram filters

What year Cherokee? Don't use STP or Fram. If your Jeep is 91 or later, go to Napa and get a 1085. O'Reilly's now carries Wix also.

My 95 i6 has a fram on it from the previous owner. Short and fat with lots of additional room so no idea why yours wouldn't fit.

You can always pick up a Mopar Filter at walmart. I know when I took off the fram filter when I first bought my 98 at made a big difference on my oil pressure. Fram filters are garbage on the Jeep 4.0.

?? It's. 1995 Cherokee. I threw a stp in cause it's the only one they had. The short fat one didn't fit. It like cross threads. Maybe the previous owner swapped engines?

Grab the filter number off the STP one and poke around on Google to see what engine it is for.

K&N oil filters are a waste of money and FRAM filters have a high failure rate (they commonly cause dry starts). Mopar or Wix seem to be the most recommended filters on this forum, i personally use Wix after a FRAM filter literally fell apart while on my engine (FRAM will never see another Dime from me after that).

Everywhere i ask, i hear good things about Wix. Also the only place i can find near me that sells Mopar filters is the stealership.

Anyways, that K&N looks really big and the STP isn't filtering much oil. So i would get a new filter from either Mopar or Wix quickly.

Definitely not a Jeep filter. It's for Ford/Lincoln/Mercury.

I went to the WIX site and crossed both numbers. They both have 3/4-16 threads, so either should thread on. The K&N crosses to a 51068, and the STP crosses to a 57301. If you look up your application, it comes up with a 51085, which is just slightly shorter than the 51068. Many on here (myself included) run the 51515, which is even a little longer than the 51068.

A FL-1A is big, long and fat, available just about everywhere and the threads fit perfect.....at least on a '98 anyway, but gotta be careful with the threads on the filter adapter......don't force a filter on. IIRC, the FL-1A less than $4 at Walmart.

My '92 has the filter pointing up at the side of the Jeep, didn't realize they changed the adapters

IMO one of the best choices for a filter. That is what I run...low restriction,higher capacity and cheap. What more could you ask for?

Can someone take a picture of there filter from a top view? the short fat filter would thread on for like 2 seconds and it just get tight and stops moving
