Default Unconnected hose

I have a 92 XJ 4.0. I replaced fuel pump and fuel filter. It still won’t start. Today I noticed a disconnected hose that is gurgling when I try to start the engine. It smells like gas and it run along the firewall to driver side and attaches to a metal line that run along side of fuel lines. What is the hose called and what is it supposed to connect to?

Hi, Charles. Welcome!

Sounds like it's probably your fuel return line. There is a complete circuit from the tank to the fuel rail and back. Toss us some pictures and we might be able to nail this down.

I know the earlier models the best, but by your description it sounds to me as if 1} that line carries the fuel vapors from the tank to a charcoal canister in the engine bay, or 2} that line is the supply or return line to the fuel rail on top of the manifold.

With respect to your engine not starting, perhaps you might be more specific so others can help.
  • Will it turn over?
  • Is there power to the pump?
  • Is the fuel pump running?
  • Is pressure built up in the fuel rail?
  • Is/are the line/lines clogged?
Besides replacing a fuel pump... What did/didn't you do? What did/didn't you test? What have you inspected? There is an entire list of things it could be.
