They are surprisingly easy and rewarding to replace.

Some parts store folks will help pop them in. Those, batteries, windshield wipers, etc.

I gave up on store bought struts. The original ones on my 1992 XJ have small wire "pins" that you insert through the ball-end that holds them on.
The replacement ones seem to just have a metal spring that WILL fail most every time you close the gate.
I just use a broomstick now. Sucks, but I haven't found a solution OR the original struts with the pins ANYWHERE.
Nevermind! Amazon.com to the rescue AGAIN! Ordering as I type this..

My dad put these super powerful gas struts on my 89 about 4 ish years ago and they still open the trunk by themselves. I just press the button, pull it up a bit and the struts push it up the rest of the way. I can get the part number for you if you want
I installed new struts that I bought at NAPA. They had a big selection. Then with a couple of brackets that I also got at NAPA, I moved the old struts to the hood. Still have plenty of lift to raise and hold the hood up. No more prop rod.
Buy two of these if it's a 1997-2001 model:
You can install with basic tools. Unbolt old, bolt on new. Replace one at a time. Having a friend or a stick to hold up the hatch helps.

the friend would be better than the stick...
