Tried to change the diff fluid by removing the diff cover. Failed.
No offense to anyone posting here or to the OP but do we have to be so harsh? I'm sure there are many people on here that didn't start as a mechanical prodigy, how about a little constructive criticism rather than blatant insult. Granted the OP should have researched a small amount such as a you tube video or asking on here, but since he decides to post what sounds like his first ever mechanical experience we just collectively destroy him. I just think it could have been handled differently, that's all. I hope this doesn't discourage the OP from trying to learn more about his jeep or asking for help or input from this forum.
Just my $.02

I give anyone regardless of experience a lot of credit in tackling some of these projects. For many they are well within their comfort zone. For others, it's way outside of it: Beyond here dragons lie.
I think the best course to chart is to reset our default settings. Bimmer would be better served by researching more and being more assertive with his projects and the collective should have more patience and be less insulting in their responses. Insults serve no one well and it degrades the integrity of this forum.....

I agree in total with what you've written but, (here comes the qualifier), one also has to help themselves and do so with intelligence. Reading someone's whinnings (sp?) in previous posts about the difficulty of working on an XJ and all the special tools required does get old and can easily put people off. I am not inditing, judging or impugning him. It is merely an observation.

Yea, the problem is when you've never done it, you don't know how much force is acceptable vs. now you're going to damage it and make it worse. This is why even the simplest jobs are very difficult and time consuming the first time, when your dad or uncle or friend isn't showing you, which is probably how most of you learned in the first place.

I'm not standing up for anyone. Just merely making an observation. My personal thought on this is, if someone posts something that that gets under my skin, I have a choice. I can return fire or just let it go. I can offer advice and that can be accepted or rejected. No worries either way. I just think it's foolish to invest so much negative energy into it.....
I'm not exactly sure what defines a noob, # of posts or time involved. Been here almost 3 years and read it daily.... Maybe I'm an old noob....

I'm not a noob... But here's my take. I'll be as blunt as possible.
Is this guy obviously lacking common mechanical sense? Yes. Obviously. There's your shot for those of you that want to ridicule the guy.
However, he actually wants to tackle some stuff himself. This automatically ranks him ahead of the other 90% of the US population that is scared to change their own air filter.
So cut the guy some slack.
Bimmer, go get dirty and break some ****. Report back. Repeat.
