No offense to anyone posting here or to the OP but do we have to be so harsh? I'm sure there are many people on here that didn't start as a mechanical prodigy, how about a little constructive criticism rather than blatant insult. Granted the OP should have researched a small amount such as a you tube video or asking on here, but since he decides to post what sounds like his first ever mechanical experience we just collectively destroy him. I just think it could have been handled differently, that's all. I hope this doesn't discourage the OP from trying to learn more about his jeep or asking for help or input from this forum.

That. Sounds like the last guy went nuts with the RTV. Get a thin knife and cut all the way around between the cover and the housing.

It wasn't a matter of a write-up. Even though Jeep write-ups are the most poorly written DIY's of any car forum out there, for this one, I knew what to do. I read about 10 different links about removing the diff cover.
Mine just wasn't going to come off. It didn't even have ANY of that flex you'd expect knowing only silicone is holding it on. I bet I could have not even put the 10 bolts back in, and there would be no leak. That's how solid this thing was mated.
I made the right call by not screwing it up and gouging and bending the sh/t out of it trying to get it off. If it starts leaking, I will have a mechanic replace it with a new diff cover.
Also, the drain plug seemed supple and flexible still. It didn't feel like it needed replacing. But, if it leaks, I will pop in a new one.

Ok then why did you post? My 9 year old brother helped me change the cover, and by helped I mean he removed the old one on there from 94.
Lol @ you.
You can bend the cover a whole lot and it won't leak, my got bent to hell banging into rocks and crap. No leaks

Me and a friend were discussing last night about how you should start a 4x4 Comedy Show. I think it'd be pretty good.

If I can bust the damn diff cover (both front and back) off my '91 without issue, then wtf? And the front one seemed like it was the same 22 year old seal. I am guessing the PO just siphoned it out.
