Default transmission wont shift up.

Clean engine bay last night and headed out this morning to find trans. reluctant to up shift. Have to run motor up to about 4 grand to shift up to next gear. downshifting fine and no other obvious trouble?

Cleaned how, with a garden hose or wiped with rags. Did you cover the bunch of electrical connections at rear of engine on passenger side?
Perhaps the transmission cable came detached or lost its proper positioning, when that cable length is not correct it can cause jeep to shift at odd RPMs.

water and rags, got everything pretty wet. left hood open over night to help dry out. washed before with no troubles just wasn't sure if this had happen to someone else for a quick diagnostic before I attempt a trip home this afternoon. Parked in a very hot lot today with plenty of sun, maybe it will dry out and return to normal. Sorry this is an 87 laraedo with factory auto trans. Haven't figured out how to enter my jeep info to profile yet "newbie"!!

Does it shift manually?
Could be you got a electrical connection to the trans wet.

1987!? Perhaps it is a Peugeot transmission and not the AW4. Will have to figure that out.

haven't tried to shift out manually, will play around at lunch shortly. staying in 3rd this morning, cant get up fast enough for overdrive with my swampers on. will study trans for I.D. at lunch also. I say i couldnt i ran it up to 70 on a straight this morn. and it shifted to o.d. then right back to 3rd as i had to slow up. 60 is fast enough with the nasty tires. jeep has been in garage for a couple of months, put my duramax in trans. shop this week and needed xj for work. ran fine for 2 days till I cleaned motor last night. she normally lands on the trailer and goes to the woods.

All is well after a lunch drive. water must have been in one of the tranny connectors.
Shifting is back to normal after a good bake in the sun. Thanks to Steve and mad marty for input. Loving the jeep forum!!

No almost original, normal wear parts. map sensor is the only fuel item i have ever replaced. Been in the family for 20 years, purchased in 97 from family friend. Rescued from tow on motor home, and introduced it to the trail. been buddies ever since. Instant cooling troubles and fixed with the upsize desert cool radiator. 1 a/c compressor, both idlers, 1 alternator. recent brake booster and cyl. All in all she's been bout bullet proof!

Washed down on many occasions. Cruiser 54 has the cure with some electrical issues developing as of late. Jeep sat up a good bit a couple of years ago and in need of some connector t.l.c. Idle cold lil irractic, yet flat as pancake once up to temp. always shifted up to quick since i bought it, now ive developed this rev to 3400 before i shift problem. Let me mention how many crank sensors ive done, big guy with big hands but got it down pat.
