Transmission mount bolt snapped
so i was making a high clearanse transmission crossmember and i was taking the old mount off and one of the two 18mm head bolts that bolt the mount to the transmission snapped off in the transmission case housing whatever you wanna call it. Has this happend to anyone and how did you get it out? What should i do drill it and re tap new threads?

can you weld a nut to the stub?
try to thread it on a thread or two and plug weld it with lots of heat.

reverse drill
Heya,
Reverse drill bits, and easy outs.
If you try a gas welder you'll melt the aluminum.
Mig/Tig/stick
Tape off round the bolt hole so you don't screw more metal than necessary

[QUOTE=TurtleFD;2353127]Heya,
Reverse drill bits, and easy outs.
X2 If you cant find left handed (reverse) drill bits a regular one will do. Eyeball the center of the bolt the best you can then center punch and drill. Be sure you drill straight to avoid drilling through the side of the bolt and damaging the trany. housing. Start out with a small hole then move up to a bigger bit. Then carefuly heat the bolt with a torch and try to remove it with an easy out, but use care with easy outs a good set is made of carbide or cobalt if you snap one of them off your day just got real crappy.
Trust me I'm a machinist
Good luck

I would love to know how many people ever get an "easy out" to actually work unless the bolt that's snapped off is freely turning in the hole. I had that situation when I broke the head of an alternator mounting bolt on my old '67. The head of the bolt broke but I managed to turn the bolt out by a tiny bit of metal that stuck out and using a drift. That was a once in a lifetime moment I'm sure. All the other bolts I've had stuck in a block have never come out with an easy out. Just drill them out and save your money.
