Plus as you state your "12 years as a Service Manager and Shop Foreman at a Jeep dealer". ALL Jeep dealers around here and all that I have spoken to say that the ATF+4 has superceeded the Dexron III requirement and are most adamant about that.
Not really. Here's a good chance to do a poor man's flush. If it doesn't clean up, which it will, then pull the screen. Besides "looks like motor oil" is a relative term.

I'll bet every one of those guys at the dealership weren't around during the introduction of the AW4 in 1987, not the end of it's use in 2001.
All they know is what has been spoon fed to them in the bulletins. F1Addict is tight on the money in his assessment of the situation.

So I changed the fluid today I sure enough it looked like really burnt motor oil....changed the fluid checked the dip stick and it was nice and red....drove it for a few minutes rechecked and the level was good...color changed from to the look of a fresh oil change...maybe one more change will do it.

When you drained out the old fluid, not all of it comes out, so when you added the the fresh it mixed with what was left.

Keep up the good work. Drive it for a week or so and do it all over again.

Lather, rinse, repeat UNTIL the fluid stays RED in color!

As for fluid type, I will not use nor will I recommend ATF+4, no matter WHAT the Chrysler bulletin says. The fluid for the AW4 is Dex/Merc III compatible. Not all AW4 transmissions will experience slippage with ATF+4, but enough have to warrant concern.

Why in the heck would you want to take that chance? Dex/Merc has proven to give extremely long service life for the AW4 transmission with no worries. Use it.

It seemed to shift a little smoother as well...only downside is I found some oil leakage while underneath...not sure where its coming from.

3 Gallons of SuperTech Dex/Merc ATF(Wal-Marts brand)is my Favorite AW4 drain and fill fluid. Sometimes after draining and refilling the AW4 sump(4 quarts/1 Gallon) these 3 times, I will do a final fill of one Gallon Castrol Dex/Merc ATF. Thats only if I Really Like the Jeep.

I did the adjustment to my throttle cable. It took up about a 1/4 of slack. It shifts differently than before but it seems to be a little rougher with a hitch during shift. I can tell that it down shifts before reaching a higher rpm....before if we're running 60-70 I was around 2000-2200 rpm....now at the mph it's between 1800-2000 rpm. It seems 3rd gear hangs around for a while

can motor oil & trans fluid somehow mix into each other ?

tryin to figure out why trans fluid is so dark, have no idea what PO has done or didnt do .. doesnt smell burnt, feels super slick in hand

I've been slowly changin the trans fluid .. bought this jeep 6 months, 1st automatic Ive owned .. 1993 base xj AW4 .. rebuilt motor at sometime, 228k total on clock

thanks to all the help on here, fluid swap seems to be good so far

swapped 7 quarts of trans fluid .. shifting better every change .. no pandoras box yet .. thinkin I may dump all of it ,, start fresh

is it possible for motor oil & trans fluid to mix somewhere? I do have the usual rear main leak .. dont seem to lose any trans fluid though .. tip of dipstick has some weird red lookin crud sometimes .. normal crud ? I plan on changin oil 1500 miles, til engine oil stops turning black so fast .. clean her out

YES .. using Wix filter now .. jeep had a fram when i bought it
