I have a 1989 jeep cherokee 4.0 l 6 cyl with an automatic transmission. When I put the jeep in reverse it won't move and just revs. I had a leak and lost some transmission fluid, could putting more fluid in fix this problem?

First step with any auto trans issue is check the fluid. If it is old, smelly, or discolored I would recommend a filter and flush while your at it.

I agree with the first part. but, there is no filter in an AW4. It's just a screen. Drain and fill as many times as needed to get red fluid.

Never flush one.

Yep^^^^^^

The AW4 trans filter is just a screen. It is not designed to filter fluids as a oil filter or fuel filter does.

changing this type of filter is a waste of money. Only under super extreme circumstances would you need to change one,,but then again Im sure just a few good drain and refills would of done fine.

I replaced the filter or screen the other day. I also put more fluid back into it but it's still a little discolored. Should I drain and refill a couple more times or is there something else I should check up on

Yes do a few more until nice and red. There was left over transmission fluid in the torque converter that mixed with the new fluid.

I took it for a drive today and the pick up was slow. It would Rev to 2000 rpms almost and barely move. After driving around a little the reverse started to work but was a little sticky.

I was told that the starting out at a higher rpm could be an electrical issue.
