I didn't think the t-case had a pump of any kind in it?? How would this work and where does it go?

i bet its a typo must be for the big cherokees

That's the pick-up screen (filter) for 231 and 242 transfer cases. It fits inside the case at the bottom. And yes they do have an oil pump.

Only time you would need to change it is when rebuilding the t-case

When you split the case, it just slides right out. Really simple. I had to rebuild my case about a month ago and the screen in mine was trashed.
