Transfer Case/Drive Shaft
Hi I have a 1987 2door Cherokee Laredo.
My Second Drive Shaft has play and is making a rattling/almost grinding noise when in drive where the drive shaft meets the transfer case. And its spinning in 2wheel drive....
Can anyone please Help me solve this problem???
Thank You

By second do you mean front shaft?
Spinning in 4WD is normal. The front axle is live in these things, and the goofy vacuum disconnect on the passenger side is unreliable and doesn't really do much. (Also if you have the SelecTrack NP242 transfer case with Full Time 4WD you don't have a vacuum disconnect.)
Not too familiar with the '87 drive shafts, do you have the top one in this pic or one like the bottom two?

Servicing the bottom two is much simpler.

Yes its the drive shaft in the front.
It has play n rattles when I play with it. its a knocking ding kind of noise.
And it looks like the shaft on the bottom of the picture..
When in 2wd it spins??? n rattles with a almost grinding noise...
Any idea how to solve this problem..keep in mind im mechanically incline.
Thanks for replying

Okay the closest style just uses regular Spicer 1310 U joints. Try these:

i just had to replace my cv joints, i had play back by the transfer case, i could move the driveshaft up and down and turn it a little, at first i thought it was my u joints, i pulled the driveshaft and looked at it, and where the ball fits inside the cup in the cv joint assembly, the seal had rotted away and grease all got out and it wore down to where there was a ton of play in it and it made a grinding noise in 4 and rattled like crazy starting about 50 mph. i hope for your sake its that...its not a bad fix, but if its in your transfer case.....your having a problem like me

i think the play is coming from the yoke. it has play as if its going to spin like if i hit the gas...i discover that the noise is coming from there bc i moved it back in forth with my hands...moves mabe haft inch or inch back n forth...
im jus going to hire someone to fix it bc its to complicated to get an accurate answers through the internet.. not to mention theres hovering noise with the damn rattling n its killing my gas. such a good motor that burned no oil in 4000 miles with 125k
