Default Transfer Case Dilemma

Hey Guys, I've been in hiding since a very traumatic month of May (Death in the family, refrigerator quit, dryer quit, wrecked my 88xj) so I'm climbing out of my hole with a 1990 Cherokee Laredo Limited.

My beloved 88 still runs and drives, it's a real war horse.

My new 90

The 90 has a near perfect body(almost no rust anywhere) my problem is I have to replace the 242 transfer case with the 231 out of my 88. I am in desperate need of a FSM in any form with wiring diagrams. I have all this for my 88 but I'm not finding what I need there, and I have searched many forums without success. Also I really need input from you who have done this concerning the pit falls of this operation. A good video for the 90 would be a God send.

My sincerest apologies to Cruiser54 for the desperation emails that I sent in my search for a replacement. I know you don't have the time for that and you're still my guru.

Anyway, Thanks for all the help you continue to give. This is indeed an xj family.

Thanks Rob, I'm pretty sure that the 84-91 is the manual I have, I don't know if it's identical, but I'll definitely put both links with my resource materials.

It should be a near straight swap assuming the spline counts on the trans output match match. Auto and manual had different splines during those years. The 90 likely doesn't have the front axle disconnect. I have a 242 that will eventually replace my 231 in my 89.

My 1990 XJ Laredo 4 door auto, 6 cylinder has or rather had the axle disconnect.

I should have been more clear. I don't believe his 1990 with the 242 would have had the D30 disconnect. I think the disco went away altogether after 92?

Thanks ya'll, does anyone have a drawing that shows the mounting bolts and maybe labels the connections. I won't be able to start till I round up a transmission jack, but I'd like to have a better idea of what to expect. I haven't done a jeep yet but a bunch of old gms.

242 never had disconnect.
Both 88 and 90 had axle disconnect with 231.
It's a simple swap.
Do the CAD elimination in the link below. Easy.

So, since my 90 never had axle disconnect, all I need to do is swap in the 231? Sounds like a plan. Thanks all, and thanks Cruiser54.

You could also swap the transfer case shifter and bezel.

The 242 and 231 linkages might be a different lengths? Haven't gotten around to swapping mine yet, but I think the 242 is slightly longer than the 231. Compare the driveshaft lengths.

6 nuts to unbolt the xfer case, btw. Short wrenches and lowering or removing the crossmember will help get at them.

Thanks Cruiser54 and lawsoncl, I plan to use shifter, linkage and bezel. And thanks for the tip on the wrenches. I will definitely remove the cross member.

Default New Problem

OK Guys, I'm back. I got the 242 out and am ready to start pulling the 231 out of my 88. The problem is the 242 has a 2 connector plug and the 231 has a 4 connector plug. How do I get around this?

Is that a 4WD sense switch? I would imagine the 231 has 2 inputs and 2 outputs or possibly only 2 are used but the switch may have been used on other vehicles. If it is, I'd get a multimeter and see which pins connect when the plunger is pressed and just splice 2 wires into the loom.
