Default trans trouble in a 2000 after starter change

Does anyone know if they are a fuse or something simple that control's the transmission shifting? Today is the 1st time I drove the jeep since I put the starter in and now my obd2 port isn't reading my transmission isn't shifting. I checked the fluid and its good and no metal pieces. Could my trans go bad from sitting 2 weeks or when I pulled a fuse could I have done something. It won't shift unless it's in the low rpms or you set on it in that case its just enough to get you up a hill.when I pulled all the fuses both hood and in the cab could I.have done something

The Transmission Control Module is powered from two different fuses. F11 in the Junction Block (passenger footwell) and fuse F16 (IOD) in the Power Distribution Center.

Did you unplug the battery before replacing the starter? Any accidental shorts? Maybe retrace your steps and see what might've happened during that job. Loose ground or electrical issue somewhere, sounds like. Check all your fuses to be sure.

A couple questions
Is the 2000 XJ Transmission computer controlled? A friend told me to swap ecm with another XJ of the same year to make sure its all good.I'm also going to clean the NSS tomorrow to see if that has anything to do with the no start issue and maybe the shifting. I'm also going to check every fuses and relays. Does anyone else have any ideas of what else I should check? At this point I'm willing to check anything that may fix my trans and starter?

I unplugged the tcm because my trans wouldn't shift right.Since its unplugged I can shift it manually go figure anyways does this mean I need a new Tcm or can I clean it some how and is it hurting the trans by shifting manuals? I'd like be able to put it in Drive and just go instead of 1 then 2-3

First off do you have Check Engine Light codes that came on since you have been noticing the shifting errors? Second, if you do believe that your TCU has gone bad (I have not found a way of testing these with a multimeter as of yet) one of the easiest ways of verifying this is your problem is just to pick one up from your local junkyard (around me in Chicago they go for $15). What I do believe could be the issue though is your ground connection for the TCU might be either not fully attached or may have been damaged when you were replacing the starter. The ground for the TCU can be found on the passenger side of the engine block near the oil dipstick. You can verify this to be the case by checking for continuity between the ground at the plug and the body (non painted surface work the best)

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

Can you post a pic of what the ground wire looks like.my dip stick is loose from removing the bracket that went on the starter.not sure what it does but it was left off when my starter 1st went out.not by me but the..guy who let me borrow his starter when mine went out.do you think this bracket could have anything to do with me not being able to start my jeep by the key
