Default Trans Fluid

I think I made a mistake when I changed my trans filter and fluid. I used Valvoline Mercon V... is this the right fluid?

So how do I flush out the Mercon V without removing the pan aging? Can I drain fill drain fill?

You dont.........
That said you are probably fine. Mercon V is also Dexron V, unless it was an official Ford Bottle. Dexron III is no longer being made. I had a problem finding Dexron IIII when I changed mine.

Using 5 quarts of a better fluid, mixed with 10 or so quarts of a lesser fluid is not going to make a huge difference.

Its a Jeep, drive the thing till it breaks and then fix it.

When I removed the trans pan it had red RTV and no gasket. Was this factory?

The new filter we bought came with a new gasket.....applied a thin film of rtv to both sides of the gasket and snugged the pan bolts up.....a year later, it's dry as a bone on the outside.

I used the gasket that came with the filter. Was just wondering if the red RTV was from the factory or last owner.

When I was at the Jeep dealer getting my S1 shift solenoid, I ASKED for a pan gasket. They looked it up and told me RTV only (1996). I put it back together with RTV after cleaning the old stuff off, and it doesn't leak.
