Default Torque Converter Engage Delay

Hello Everybody...I'm new to owning a Cherokee.........I have a 1996 Cherokee Sport 4.0 Automatic.........If I'm stopped with my foot on the break everything feels fine. Sometimes when I take off from a dead stop there seems to be a delay in the torque converter locking in at times...Doesn't happen always.............about 50%.........It kicks in with a clunk and then everything is fine.........Shifts great ........My AT knowledge is very limited. I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction..............

Have you checked the fluid level and condition of not only the trans but every other part of your NEW Cherokee's drivetrain?

Have you tried changing the fluid? Sounds more like a trans issue than a converter issue. You might pull the inspection cover and check the flex plate bolts, also.

Gonna change the fluid and the screen today........I'll let you know how that works out...................When I replaced the radiator it had some Trans fluid in it so this may very well be the problem.........It was the original 18yr old radiator..........I don't want to flush a tranny that old so I'll just keep changing the fluid all summer. Thank God the AW4 has a drain plug...

[Screen was black but not clogged..............Put it all back together.......Still same problem....Checked TPS and was OK....Honestly, I don't begin to understand what the trans throttle cable does..LOL..What was happening was transmission wasn't downshifting into first unless you stepped on gas at times causing Clunk/Jerk......Didn't happen every time and didn't happen when fluid was cold.........Talked to a transmission man who said replace shift solenoids.............Removed pan again...........replaced solenoids........now it downshifts like a new transmission...........I hope this information helps other people..................Every Jeep is so different and has it's own idiosyncrasies. Anybody want a container of TransX...................LOL

You were correct. It had nothing to do with the torque converter.

Yes, I took every bodies advise. I replaced the TPS. I adjusted the throttle cable after some research.
Re-Torqued the torque converter bolts. Still changing fluid. It was black. Replaced the filter. Replaced all three solenoids. I couldn't be happier. I thank everybody who participated. Taking her on a long trip to see my daughter in Charlotte....
