Seems to me that the auto transmission is starting to slip a bit/shifting late, and when I sit at a light in drive with the brakes on, the engine will idle kinda broken, but then it feels like the idle pushes through and levels itself out. The engine is a IL6 with 240K+ I'm not sure what to do, any ideas?

Pull the pan and see if there is some clutch pack material in it,check for any metal shavings, look at the filter. you do have some miles, may want to track down a good spare.

It's not slipping yet but I would like to be ready for this repair before I break down. Any Ideas on a good tranny that wont break the bank. I do plan to put a d44 in the back with 4.10 when I can.

I do almost all my repairs from the local jy,With the clunkers program there is some very good xjs showing up with locked up motors but the rest is fine. I seen two the other day with less than 140k on them,I am going to pull one just for a spare, and the best thing is it only cost me $85 to get one. To get one rebuilt or buy a rebuilt is going to be at least $2000.
i have the same problem too
but i have an 88 XJ 4 Door
with 97k on the clock.
my trans case slips while driving at any speed at random intervals
also, when accelerating from a stop, it slips and takes time to kick in, at any speed take-off as well.
any ideas?

do not drain your trans pan.......... if it is slipping than there will be metal shaving in your trans fluid.. if there are than this is keeping your clutch plates connecting and if you drain it there is a really good chance than your tranny will not work anymore.. this is common practice for any old transmission...
