Tail light socket, where art thou?
Just bought a "new" 1992 Cherokee Loredo, I6, 4sp-Automatic. My first project is to get all the external lights working, specifically for this thread the rear turn signal lights (note that the front turn signal lights work fine). When I removed the rear light assembly, I found 3 separate bulbs: 1 dual-filament bulb for the tail light/brake light function, 1 single filament bulb for the turn signal function and 1 single filament bulb for the reverse light function. Both the turn signal and reverse use the same two-wire socket and use an 1156 type bulb. Now for the problem, the sockets for the turn and reverse lights are rotten and corroded; however, I don't know the part number or vendor for them. I have looked online and tried several local auto parts stores, can't find anything close. Help!

crap you are not kidding.. i just tried to find them online... wow..
i havent taken mine apart yet to see the connectors.. did you look down the aisles to see if any of the ones on the shelf would work? maybe not in the catalogs for the parts zombies... but there might be something on the aisles that has the same style...

The one for the brake/parking light uses an 1157 bulb and will need three wires, one being a black ground.
However a trip to the scrappers would be the better choice. the whole wiring harness from the tail light back to the wiring harness plug could be had for peanuts. I believe both sides have the same plug so you just need to find 1 good one.

For the 92 Cherokee rear turn socket or backup socket, O'Reilly Auto Parts Part# 85800 is for single filament bulb and 85801 is for double filament bulb replace the core of the socket. Keep the socket, which is metal, and the ground lead attached to that metal housing. The parts referenced fit inside the socket to replace the broken plastic parts. Retain the spring inside the socket as well.
More tomorrow after I finish my fix.

The part# 85800 referenced above worked great in the sockets for the backup light and turn signal. They sell for around $4, I even ordered some spares from ebay of the same. The listing I used is sold out (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...d=703288198021) and was said to be for a Peterbilt, but the socket or bulb type is what your looking for these to slip inside of. Some wire splicing and put it all back in place.

Found the parts to make this work:
1. Backup and Turn Signal: S-71 from Standard Motor Products

2. Brake and Running Light: S-519 from Standard Motor Products

Combined these are pretty pricey, but they do the job perfectly. 1107 bulb needed for the brakes and 1106 bulb needed for the other two.
The brake bulb holder is a bit long, so you do need to back out the lower torx mount to get the space needed to do this.
The wiring is a bit tricky. Here is a close up of the wiring for the brake light. red to white/brown, black to black, and white to blue/red.
For the other two lamps, it is very straight forward. Bulb holder ground to black. Bulb holder center wire to whatever color on the Jeep harness.
I used bulb grease on all metal surfaces, including the solder joints (before I covered them in heat shrink.) The old sockets rusted out, so anything I could do to prevent that from happening again I did. I also put one of the marginally good bulb sockets back into the blank hole by the side marker to try and keep water out of the lamp housing. Basically plugged the hole.
The brake holder went right in. The other two took some work. The outer diameter is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the plastic. While leaving the center (inner) diameter alone, I filed the outer diameter to be maybe 1mm larger.
It's back to working like the old days! The new one is the lamp on the passenger side and the lamp on the driver's side is original.
