I had a #272 t-case in my 88 chrerokee and had to swap it out. For some reason I was stupid and didnt check the # on the t-case going in and it a 242. There is a foue prong connector on the old t-case that the other one doesnt have a plug for. It does have another type of sensor on it though. Is that sensor a big deal? What is it? Is it interchangable?

If your 88 came with a 231 it had vacuum lines that engaged the disco axle up front and the 242 won't have it. If you haven't already you will have to find a way to manually engage the 2 piece axle or replace it with a one piece shaft. The vacuum connector could be what you are looking at on the old case.

Im dont think it vacuum line im looking at. It looks like a electronic plug that circular. As far as the axle I have no clue what I could do about engaging it. I see no vac line

This is what I did, but no pics. It is fairly simple. Pull the vacuum motor assembly, only 4 bolts. Then you can pull the snap ring and move the fork over and reattach the snap ring or take it apart and put a spacer in it. I put the spacer in it. I had a piece of brass tube that worked perfect. Copper tubing would be excellent.

that plug is most likely an electronic speedo sensor rather than a cable sensor. most likely you got this 242 from a zj?
you could maybe just switch out the speedo setup from the 231, but possible the speedo gear shaft might be a different length.
as for the vac axle, you can always just cheap out and slide the collar across the split shaft and hold it in place with a gear clamp. i've done it for years and had only needed to reset it once. it can be done for less then 5 bux and no more than 15 minutes from start to finish to do the job.
