Im not new to jeeps or to working on them, so this may be a dumb question, but I dont know what exactly are the sway bars for and how do they work? I know it drives better on road with them and better off road without them, thats about it!

Helps keep you going strate down the road. The reason its better without off road is because it allows you more "flex" in your axles. At slow speed it can still be deadly on road without them.

The Sway bar is what keeps your Axel solid locked with your body. The Is a front and rear. It is true they drive better on highway and just around town with it connects because it is a more stable ride. You won't bobble in corners either. On the highway it provides stability especially on bumps where the death wobble might initiate! But we take them off or get quick discos for off road because it frees your shocks and springs and allows your axel to move over things and not your whole body rocking with it. Say for instance rock crawling: disconnected the axel and wheels can articulate but your body will stay more level. You can flex your suspension this way.
If you tried doing so connected imagine rock crawling a hot wheel lol. And you could break something from the extra stress.

I'm kind of experimenting with them. The rear one is history, gone. I took the front one off to see if it was giving me the loud thump on our back roads I'm on alot. It was. I was getting ready to order new bushings for it but took it to town before doing so. Great ride especially on those wash board unimproved roads we have. Had it on I81 up to 80mph Fri. Still GOOD. I think what's letting me get away with it are my shocks. They're KYB Mono Max w/almost 300psi of pressure in them. They're overkill in most situations but with our roads I LUV'em. Anyway,I think they're controlling my lean very well. I took the front sway bar off of my '78 Power Wagon yrs back and ended up having to put on an extra set of gas shocks in the front to contol lean. I'm not suggesting everyone should remove them but so far I (and the wife) feel safe driving it.
